New Delhi, June 3 (APAC Media): The Tamil Nadu Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Government to extend the implementation period of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) until December 2028.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil.Â
Extension of Jal Jeevan Mission
The first phase of the Jal Jeevan Mission was implemented between 2019 and 2024. During this period, the programme included the execution of 45 new multi-village drinking water supply schemes, the upgradation of 56 combined water supply projects, and the implementation of 21,258 single-village water supply schemes across the state.
The extension is aimed at further strengthening rural drinking water infrastructure and ensuring continued access to safe water for households across Tamil Nadu.
Funding and Household Coverage
As part of the extended phase, Tamil Nadu will receive an initial allocation of Rs 2,177 crore from the Union Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.Â
According to an official statement, the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM) and the State Level Scheme Sanctioning Committee (SLSSC) have approved functional household tap water connections for 46.71 lakh rural households, benefiting nearly 1.86 crore people across the state.
Focus on Sustainable Water Supply
The total approved expenditure for the first phase of the mission stood at Rs 18,123 crore, comprising Rs 9,025 crore from the Centre and Rs 9,097 crore contributed by the state government.
The extended implementation period is expected to support the provision of safe, adequate, and sustainable drinking water to all rural households in Tamil Nadu while strengthening long-term water supply infrastructure in the state, the statement added.
