Noida, June 27 (APAC Media): Kotak Mahindra Bank on Saturday said its managing director and chief executive officer, Ashok Vaswani, will step down at the end of his current term on December 31, 2026, after deciding not to seek reappointment for personal reasons.
In a regulatory filing, the private sector lender said its board has taken note of Vaswani’s decision and initiated a succession planning process to identify a new chief executive. The appointment will be subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India and the bank’s shareholders.
Vaswani, who assumed office on January 1, 2024, succeeded founder Uday Kotak after the latter stepped down following more than two decades at the helm of the bank. Before joining Kotak Mahindra Bank, Vaswani held senior leadership positions at Barclays and Citigroup.

The bank said Vaswani will continue to serve as managing director and CEO until the completion of his current tenure, ensuring continuity in leadership during the transition period.

The board expressed its appreciation for Vaswani’s contribution since taking charge and said it remains committed to ensuring a smooth succession process.
During his tenure, Kotak Mahindra Bank focused on strengthening its digital capabilities, expanding its lending business and improving operational efficiency.
The lender also worked towards addressing regulatory concerns after restrictions imposed by the Reserve Bank of India in 2024 on onboarding new customers through certain digital channels.
In recent quarters, the bank has reported steady financial performance, supported by growth in advances and stable asset quality.
It has also undertaken measures to enhance technology infrastructure and customer service as part of its long-term strategy.
The succession process comes at a time when India’s banking sector continues to witness increased competition, with lenders investing in digital platforms and expanding retail and corporate banking operations.
Kotak Mahindra Bank said it will inform stock exchanges of further developments regarding the appointment of its next managing director and chief executive officer once the selection process is completed.
