Noida, June 28 (APAC Media): The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS), a government-backed small savings programme, continues to provide retirees with a secure source of regular income through fixed interest payments.
At the current interest rate of 8.2% per annum, an investment of ₹30 lakh—the maximum limit under the scheme—can generate an average monthly income of around ₹20,550.
The interest earned on a ₹30 lakh investment amounts to ₹2.46 lakh annually. Since SCSS pays interest on a quarterly basis, investors receive ₹61,500 every three months, equivalent to an average monthly income of approximately ₹20,500.
The principal amount remains intact until maturity, making the scheme suitable for retirees seeking predictable cash flow.
Here’s an investment chart summarizing the SCSS returns for a ₹30 lakh investment at an 8.2% annual interest rate.
| Category | Amount |
|---|---|
| Investment | 3,000,000 |
| Annual Interest | 246,000 |
| Quarterly Interest | 61,500 |
| Average Monthly Income | 20,500 |
The SCSS is available to individuals aged 60 years and above. Certain retired civilian employees between 55 and 60 years of age, as well as retired defence personnel meeting prescribed conditions, are also eligible to open an account.
The scheme has a tenure of five years, with an option to extend it by an additional three years after maturity.
Backed by the Government of India, the scheme is considered one of the safest investment avenues for senior citizens.

Unlike market-linked financial products, SCSS provides fixed returns, shielding investors from fluctuations in equity and debt markets while ensuring a steady income stream.
The scheme also qualifies for tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act for eligible investors opting for the old tax regime, subject to the overall deduction limit.
However, the interest earned is taxable according to the investor’s applicable income tax slab, and tax may be deducted at source if it exceeds the prescribed threshold.
Financial planners often recommend SCSS as a core component of retirement planning because of its combination of capital safety, government guarantee and regular income.
The quarterly interest payments can help pensioners meet recurring expenses such as healthcare, household costs and utility bills without liquidating their savings.
For married couples, each eligible spouse can invest up to ₹30 lakh separately, allowing a combined investment of ₹60 lakh.
At the prevailing interest rate of 8.2%, such an investment would generate annual interest income of ₹4.92 lakh, translating to an average monthly income of around ₹41,000, although payments continue to be credited every quarter.
With interest rates on several traditional savings instruments remaining lower than the SCSS rate, the scheme continues to attract senior citizens seeking stable post-retirement income.
Its government backing, fixed returns and predictable payout structure make it one of the preferred savings options for conservative investors planning their retirement finances.
