Noida, Aug 25 (APAC Media): The government has approved the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian companies for domestic production, in a move aimed at giving a fresh push to defence manufacturing and self-reliance.
The decision was approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and is expected to expand the role of Indian companies in the country’s defence ecosystem, particularly in the production of advanced missile systems.
“In a significant step towards achieving the vision of Aatmanirbharta in defence, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has approved the transfer of DRDO-developed technologies of all conventional missile systems to Indian industries for production within the country,” the Defence Ministry said in a post on X on Tuesday.
The ministry said the technology transfer would allow Indian companies to take up indigenous production subject to the required qualifications, certifications and regulatory approvals.
“This Transfer of Technology (ToT) marks an important milestone in promoting greater participation of the Indian industries in the defence ecosystem,” the ministry said, adding that it would enable companies to undertake indigenous production.
The move is part of the government’s broader effort to reduce dependence on imported defence equipment and build a stronger domestic defence industrial base.
The ministry said the initiative would also help strengthen manufacturing capabilities and create opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other technology partners to participate in missile-system supply chains.
“The provision will enable the successful transition of missile system development to industrial production,” the ministry said. It added that the move reflects DRDO’s continued efforts to use the capabilities of Indian industry in the development and manufacture of advanced defence systems.
The decision comes as the government increasingly seeks to move defence technologies developed by DRDO from laboratories into large-scale production. Rajnath Singh has previously stressed that developing advanced weapons is not enough and that India also needs the capacity to manufacture them in large numbers and deliver them to the armed forces on time.
“Success in war is not ensured by technological superiority alone; large-scale production capability is equally crucial,” Singh said in June while inaugurating an Advanced Weapon System Complex at DRDO’s Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad.
