New Delhi, August 26(APAC Media): Xiaomi is taking a bigger bet on its own smartphone chips.
The company has unveiled the Xring O3, a new 3nm processor that will power its push towards greater control over smartphone hardware. The move also puts Xiaomi in more direct competition with chipmakers Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Xiaomi Builds On Its Chip Ambitions
Xiaomi has been developing its own silicon for several years, but the Xring O3 shows that the company wants to take that effort further. The chip is designed to handle processing, graphics, camera functions and AI workloads on the device.
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun confirmed that the processor uses a 3nm manufacturing process. TSMC is expected to manufacture the chip.
The decision is important because smartphone processors now play a bigger role in features such as generative AI, photography and power management. Having more control over the chip can also allow Xiaomi to better connect its hardware and software.
AI Is A Key Focus
The Xring O3 comes at a time when smartphone companies are putting more AI features directly on their devices. Instead of sending every AI task to the cloud, newer processors can handle more workloads locally.
For users, this can mean faster responses and lower dependence on an internet connection. Better power management will also be important as AI workloads increase on smartphones.
Xiaomi Is Not Leaving Qualcomm Yet
Despite the new chip, Xiaomi is unlikely to stop using Qualcomm and MediaTek processors across its smartphone portfolio.
The challenge is production. Developing a chip is one part of the equation; producing it in large volumes and using it across multiple devices is considerably harder.
That makes the Xring O3 less of an immediate replacement for Qualcomm and MediaTek and more of a long-term move by Xiaomi to control a larger part of its technology stack.
The bigger question now is how widely Xiaomi can deploy its own chips and whether the Xring series can eventually become a regular part of its flagship smartphone lineup.
