Noida, Sep 17 (APAC Media): The U.S. Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on Wednesday, taking the target range to 3.75%-4%, as policymakers moved to tackle inflation that has remained above the central bank’s 2% goal.
The increase was the Fed’s first rate hike since July 2023 and came despite signs that the U.S. economy continues to show resilience.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said inflation remained a key concern for policymakers.
“The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long,” Warsh said at a news conference.
The rate increase was approved unanimously by the Federal Open Market Committee.
The Fed said in its policy statement that inflation remains elevated and that policymakers would continue to assess incoming economic data before deciding on further moves.
More rate hikes remain possible.
The latest projections from Fed officials indicated that some policymakers expect another rate increase before the end of the year, although the outlook remains dependent on how inflation and economic activity develop.
Warsh said the central bank would not base its decisions solely on market expectations and would instead focus on the economic data.
Higher interest rates generally increase borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, potentially affecting mortgages, corporate loans and other forms of credit.
The decision also comes as financial markets continue to watch Treasury yields and other borrowing costs for signs of how tightly monetary policy is affecting the economy.
Political pressure
The Fed’s decision comes amid public pressure from President Donald Trump, who has argued that U.S. interest rates should be much lower.
Trump said on social media that rates “should be 1% or less,” arguing that the United States has a strong credit position.
The Federal Reserve, however, has continued to emphasise its mandate to pursue price stability and maximum employment when setting monetary policy.
With the latest move, the federal funds target range now stands at 3.75%-4%. Investors will be watching upcoming inflation, jobs and economic-growth data for clues about the Fed’s next decision.
