New Delhi, October 11 (APAC Media): The government has appointed senior IAS officer Tamboli Ayyaj Fakirbhai as Executive Director (ED) of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) for a five-year term. The appointment comes as the insurance regulator advances reforms to strengthen India’s insurance sector and expand coverage.
Why is the Appointment Significant?
Fakirbhai is a 2009-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre and a trained medical doctor. Before his appointment, he was serving as a Director in the Cabinet Secretariat, holding a Joint Secretary-level position in the Central Government.
His appointment marks the return of an IAS officer to the Executive Director-level position at IRDAI after nearly a decade.
Appointment Comes Amid Insurance Sector Reforms
The appointment comes at a significant time for India’s insurance industry, with IRDAI pursuing reforms aimed at improving insurance distribution, revisiting health insurance regulations, and encouraging greater investment in the sector.
As the insurance regulator works towards expanding access to insurance products, the government’s broader vision of Insurance for All by 2047 remains a key priority.
Fakirbhai’s administrative experience in the Central Government comes as IRDAI continues efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework, improve insurance accessibility, and support the sector’s long-term development.
His five-year tenure as Executive Director will coincide with ongoing changes in the insurance landscape, as the regulator seeks to broaden coverage and respond to evolving industry requirements.
