Kharagpur, October 27 (APAC Media): IIT Kharagpur has announced plans to establish India’s first dedicated academic school focused on Physical Artificial Intelligence (AI), backed by an investment of Rs. 35 crore.
Named the ‘Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI,’ it will focus on developing intelligent systems that can interact with and understand the physical world. Academic programmes are expected to begin in the upcoming session, subject to the necessary approvals.
What Is Physical AI?
Unlike conventional AI, which primarily processes data and operates within digital environments, Physical AI combines artificial intelligence with scientific principles, real-world sensing, and intelligent control. It enables systems to perceive, understand, and respond to their physical surroundings.
According to the institute, the school will focus on areas such as physics-informed machine learning, scientific AI, digital twins, intelligent robotics, autonomous systems, advanced sensing, and AI-based experimentation. It will also prioritise the development of reliable, explainable, and responsible AI systems, particularly for applications where accuracy and safety are critical.
Courses to Target Students and Working Professionals
The proposed academic programmes will cater to students, researchers, and working professionals across engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, and medicine.
The school will emphasise integrating specialised domain knowledge with modern AI skills, preparing learners to develop intelligent solutions for real-world challenges.
With this initiative, IIT Kharagpur aims to strengthen India’s academic and research capabilities in Physical AI, a field with potential applications across robotics, scientific research, healthcare, and advanced engineering.
