In India, Bayer has introduced Finerenone under the brand name Kerendia. Finerenone is a first-in-class non-steroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist suggested for individuals with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
Finerenone is not the same as existing CKD in T2D treatments. It works by blocking overactivation of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), which is thought to contribute to the progression of CKD and cardiovascular damage.
The major Phase III clinical trial program of Finerenone, which enrolled over 13000 patients worldwide, was designed to explore the safety and efficacy of kidney and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Finerenone considerably reduced the chance of a 57 percent Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) kidney composite outcome by 23 percent on top of optimized Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockade, and it significantly lowered the risk of a composite CV outcome by 14 percent.
Finerenone is approved in India to lower the risk of sustained Estimated eGFR decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and hospitalization for heart failure in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D.)
