New Delhi: In the latest research published by the Swedish VPN provider Surfshark, 4.7 million email accounts were compromised in India in 2022. However, the research also suggested that as compared to prior years, India has significantly improved, moving up from third to seventh place in the list of nations with the highest number of cyberattacks. India moved up the list, although Russia took the brunt of the breaches last year despite India.
In collaboration with independent cybersecurity experts, Surfshark produced the research using user information obtained from more than 27,000 publicly accessible hacked databases. Based on key data points like user countries, the researchers filtered the data. The email or website domain name, the user’s nation, city, coordinates, IP address, and other information were used to determine the users’ locations.
The number of account breaches decreased globally by 68% in 2022, according to Agneska Sablovskaja, head researcher at Surfshark, with improvements shown in Brazil, India, and the United States compared to 2021. Meanwhile, compared to the previous year, there were significant increases in data breaches in Indonesia, China, and Russia.India no longer has as many cyberattacks, but it still ranks in the top 10.
In India, the 4.7 million email accounts that were compromised in 2022 indicate a 94% drop from the year prior. India dropped from third to seventh on the list of nations that experienced the most data breaches as a result.
With 74.2 million breaches, Asia made up a quarter of all breaches worldwide. These primarily originated in China, Indonesia, and India. The breach at IndiHome, which involved approximately 74.2 million accounts, was the largest to occur in the area. The countries with the largest increases in compromised accounts, excluding Russia, were Indonesia (269%), Sri Lanka (204%), Uzbekistan (73%), and China (45 per cent).
