New Delhi: The government in Delhi has announced the introduction of blockchain in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), becoming the first in the country to adopt the technology. The government has introduced this technology to protect investigations against tampering and to make it easier to transfer reports to the court.
The state government will soon introduce the technology in securing data such as caste, domicile and character certificates issued by the revenue department, along with maintaining afforestation records in the national capital.
In forensics, blockchain can be useful in maintaining an unalterable and tamper-proof record of digital evidence. This can improve the accuracy and efficiency of investigations and provide stronger legal evidence. This is possible because blockchain uses cryptographic hashing to make the history of digital assets unalterable and transparent.
In addition, the new system will include security measures to protect FSL data from hacking. The implementation of blockchain technology ensures that the record of evidence cannot be altered at any stage, and if there is any attempt to tamper with the record, all authorized persons will be notified immediately. To make a change, a new block must be created in the blockchain.
The government has taken a major step towards improving the process of handling evidence in crime investigations by implementing blockchain technology in four stages of the chain of custody. The technology will be used when samples are received, when the case is assigned to an investigator, during the finalizing of the report, and when it is dispatched.
