VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) will initiate stringent action against those dumping waste and garbage in the side drains. Frequent blocks in drain channels and tonnes of plastic waste piling up at canals is forcing VMC to initiate stringent action against the violators.
The VMC is strictly implementing door-to-door segregated garbage collection. The civic body had issued two separate bins for dumping wet and dry garbage to the denizens and requesting them to separate garbage at their homes. The VMC is spending huge money on processing segregated garbage. While wet waste is processed into biofuel and compost, plastic waste is recycled into crystals.
Despite strict measures, VMC is failing to stop denizens from dumping garbage into the canals and drain channels. It identified that tea stalls, pan stalls and small eateries are at liberty to dump garbage including PET bottles into drains. Outfall drains connected to irrigation canals and Krishna river are getting clogged with plastic waste. Locks on irrigation canals are resembling unauthorized dump sites and VMC is spending huge amounts in cleaning the plastic waste.
VMC commissioner Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar inspected the outfall drains connected to Krishna river and expressed anger over the sanitary inspections. He directed the health wing authorities to clean the plastic waste accumulated at iron grills arranged on the end of outfall drains and ensure that there are no clogs.
