Noida, Oct 18 (APAC Media): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to Nestle India and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) over alleged misleading claims and labelling discrepancies involving several food products.
In a social media post, the regulator said certain claims on HUL’s Horlicks Women’s Plus Chocolate Nutrition Drink and Horlicks Mother’s Plus Kesar products were found to be potentially misleading or inconsistent with applicable food safety regulations.
The concerns include claims related to bone strength, healthy birth weight and the use of the term “No Added Sugar”.
“Certain claims made on the products were found to be misleading or inconsistent with the applicable food safety regulations,” the regulator said, according to the information shared in its post.
FSSAI has asked HUL to submit its response within the stipulated timeframe.
In a separate case, Nestle India and two dairy manufacturers have been issued notices over the labelling and online descriptions of Nescafé ready-to-drink coffee beverages.
The regulator flagged discrepancies between the products’ descriptions and their declared food categories, raising concerns over compliance with applicable labelling requirements.
Nestlé India has also received a separate notice over its Resource Renal Vanilla Flavour Powder, intended for the dietary management of people with chronic kidney disease.
According to FSSAI, the product was marketed without obtaining the requisite prior approval.
“The product was marketed without the required prior approval,” the regulator said, as per the details of the notice.
The companies have been asked to respond to the notices within the prescribed period. Further action will depend on their explanations and the applicable regulatory provisions.
The notices do not, by themselves, establish a final finding of liability against the companies.
