Nashik: The Nashik civic body has made a ‘plastic-to-fuel’ plant on its compost plant premises in Pathardi on the outskirts of the city, with a capacity to create 5 litres of fuel per day.
Moreover, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) also made ‘ballistic separator’ machines operational to first segregate and classify dry waste, ranging from solid to plastic, etc., with a 250 tonne a day capacity.
Both projects were inaugurated by municipal commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar on Wednesday.
NMC officials said that good-quality plastics will be separated through the ballistic machines and RDF (refuse-derived fuel) will be produced from plastic waste.
Both projects are managed and operated by a private firm appointed by the civic body. In 2001, the civic body had set up a compost plant in Pathardi to process solid waste generated in the city. Initially, the capacity of the plant was 300 metric tonnes (MT) per day. In 2008-09, the capacity was increased to 500 MT per day.
The civic administration operated the compost plant itself by 2016. In 2017, the plant was transferred to a private agency for smooth and efficient functioning and to increase capacity as required. The latter is also in the process of increasing the capacity further to 800 MT at the moment.
The Pathardi plant also accomplishes production of fertilizer from wet waste, RDF from dry waste, briquettes from garden waste and mulch, plastic granules from plastic waste, processing leachate from waste, cremation of dead animals, scientific landfilling, scientific capping of old landfills, and more.
