New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Three D Integrated Solutions Ltd. (ThreeDis) have announced the establishment of a Center of Excellence (CoE) under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
The collaboration, aimed at revolutionizing India’s airport navigation, communication, and security systems, leverages the research expertise of the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), a premier R&D organization under MeitY.
The partnership, facilitated through the MANTHAN initiative of the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, is expected to address key challenges in strategic and civilian airport systems.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between SAMEER, represented by Director General Dr P. Hanumantha Rao, and ThreeDis, represented by Chairman and Managing Director Nandy Bhatia, in the presence of Prof Ajay Kumar Sood, PSA; S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY; and senior officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Leveraging Research for Indigenous Solutions
MeitY secretary highlighted the importance of the partnership in advancing self-reliance in aviation technology. “This effort will result in the development of indigenous technologies and products of international standards in airport navigation, communication, and surveillance,” said S. Krishnan, adding that SAMEER’s research will be instrumental in meeting national requirements.
SAMEER’s research outcomes will be harnessed to develop technologies tailored to Indian requirements. “This collaboration marks a milestone in our journey to establish a Center of Excellence for collaborative research aimed at producing fully functional systems for airport navigation and communication technologies,” said Dr Hanumantha Rao. He emphasized the need to enhance indigenous research in RF and microwave systems to create secure and reliable technologies tailored for Indian airports.
Industry-Government Synergy
The MANTHAN platform, launched by Prof Ajay Kumar Sood in August 2022, played a pivotal role in facilitating this collaboration. “This initiative reflects the trust of industry in government-funded R&D organizations,” said Prof. Sood. He urged the consortia to deliver solutions in a time-bound manner to address the nation’s aviation needs.
ThreeDis, with a presence in major Indian airports, will contribute its industry expertise. “India is a strategic market for the aviation industry,” said Nandy Bhatia. “This partnership will focus on indigenous design, development, and manufacturing to meet the challenges of airport navigation and security systems.”
It should be noted that the CoE aims to develop products that not only meet India’s strategic needs but also achieve international certifications, boosting India’s reputation as a hub for cutting-edge aviation technology. Efforts are underway to create an ecosystem for certifying homegrown systems to international standards.
SAMEER’s Pioneering Role
SAMEER’s legacy in delivering mission-critical solutions positions it as a key player in this initiative. With a history of societal and economic impact, the organization’s R&D efforts are set to revolutionize the aviation sector, aligning with the Government of India’s goal of making India a product nation.
This collaboration is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global aviation industry while ensuring that its airport systems are secure, reliable, and tailored to its unique socio-economic context.
