New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched the Aadhaar Good Governance portal to facilitate a more efficient approval process for Aadhaar authentication requests.
This initiative aims to enhance Aadhaar’s role in governance, improve ease of living, and expand access to essential services for residents.
The portal was officially launched by MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan in the presence of Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI); Inder Pal Singh Sethi, Director General of the National Informatics Centre (NIC); Manish Bhardwaj, DDG UIDAI; Amod Kumar, DDG UIDAI; and other senior officials from MeitY, UIDAI, and NIC.
Aadhaar Authentication Expansion Under New Rules
The Aadhaar Good Governance portal (swik.meity.gov.in) comes into effect following the notification of the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules, 2025 under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits, and Services) Act, 2016.
This amendment, notified in late January 2025, aims to enhance transparency and inclusivity in decision-making.
Aadhaar, recognized as the world’s most trusted digital ID, has been used by over a billion Indians for authentication more than 100 billion times in the past decade.
The expansion of its authentication scope is expected to further simplify access to essential services and improve governance efficiency.
Krishnan emphasized that the platform, along with continuous improvements in authentication processes, will expedite the integration of new use cases in governance and ease of living.
Bhuvnesh Kumar highlighted that Aadhaar is a key enabler of India’s digital economy and that the new portal will help entities submit and secure authentication approvals more efficiently.
Enabling Seamless Authentication for Public Interest Services
Under the amended rules, both government and private entities can now use Aadhaar authentication for public interest services in areas such as innovation, knowledge dissemination, and ease of living.
This will facilitate trusted transactions for both service providers and beneficiaries across various sectors.
The amendment allows Aadhaar number holders to seamlessly access services in industries including hospitality, healthcare, credit rating, e-commerce, education, and aggregator platforms.
Additionally, service providers can leverage Aadhaar authentication for staff attendance, customer onboarding, e-KYC verification, and exam registrations, among other applications.
Comprehensive Authentication Guide and Future Integrations
The newly launched portal will serve as a detailed guide for authentication-seeking entities, offering step-by-step instructions on applying and onboarding for Aadhaar authentication.
It will also provide a standardized operating procedure (SOP) for applicants.
Future integrations may include face authentication capabilities within private sector applications, enabling seamless and secure identity verification anytime, anywhere.
MeitY has underscored its commitment to making Aadhaar more user-friendly by enabling greater accessibility and ease of living for citizens.
As part of this initiative, the Ministry had earlier invited public and stakeholder feedback on the proposed authentication rule amendments during April and May 2023, ensuring an inclusive approach to policymaking.
The Aadhaar Good Governance portal marks a significant step in India’s digital governance transformation, reinforcing Aadhaar’s role as a crucial pillar of transparent, inclusive, and citizen-centric service delivery.
