New Delhi: Amitava Mukherjee has officially assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) Limited. Before his appointment, he had been leading the company as CMD (Additional Charge) since March 2023 while concurrently serving as the Director (Finance) since November 2018. Mukherjee also chairs NMDC Steel Limited and Legacy Iron Ore Limited.
A 1996-batch officer of the Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS), Mukherjee has an extensive background in governance and financial management. His leadership has been instrumental in NMDC’s recent achievements, including a historic milestone—becoming the first Indian iron ore mining company to exceed an annual production of 45 million tonnes in FY24. His strategic initiatives have strengthened NMDC’s financial and operational performance, resulting in record-high turnover and net worth.
Mukherjee has played a key role in modernizing NMDC’s digital and technical infrastructure. He successfully revived operations at India’s only mechanized diamond mine and spearheaded the commissioning of the NMDC Steel Plant, a significant industrial development in Bastar. His vision has also led to NMDC’s global expansion, with strategic ventures into gold mining in Australia and the development of a comprehensive global growth strategy.
A strong proponent of responsible mining, Mukherjee has reinforced financial discipline and investment strategies. Under his leadership, NMDC is progressing toward its ambitious goal of expanding its mining capacity to 100 million tonnes by 2030, positioning itself as a key player in the global mining industry.
