New Delhi: India and Bhutan are set to establish their first railway link, connecting Assam’s Kokrajhar district to Gelephu in Bhutan.
The proposed 69.04-km railway line has completed its Detailed Project Report (DPR), marking a key step toward implementation.
Infrastructure and Route Details
The railway project will start from Kokrajhar in Assam and end in Gelephu, Bhutan. It includes six stations- Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu.
The planned infrastructure consists of two major bridges, 29 other bridges, 65 minor bridges, one road over-bridge, 39 road under-bridges, and two viaducts of 11 meters each.
Strategic and Economic Implications
The railway link is expected to improve cross-border trade and facilitate movement between the two countries. By enhancing connectivity, the project aligns with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, which focuses on strengthening ties with neighboring nations.
Improved transportation networks can also contribute to economic development in the border regions.

With the DPR completed, the project is now awaiting approvals before construction can begin. Once operational, the railway link could play a crucial role in regional economic integration and infrastructure development.
