Kohima: Nagaland University is launching a new undergraduate program in Basic Sciences from the academic year 2025-26. This makes it the first university in the North East to do so. Incidentally, this is the only Central University in the state.
Nagaland University will also launch a Multidisciplinary Research Center that will offer more programs in Basic Science. This Center will offer three and four-year undergraduate programs in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology.
In future, the University plans to add more Basic Science programs including Integrated Postgraduate Programs in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology. PG + PhD programs with an emphasis on multidisciplinary research are also on the anvil.
These initiatives are consonant with National Education Policy 2020 principles and strategic imperative. According to Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, they will offer creative combinations of disciplines of study that would enable multiple entry and exit points, as well as re-entry options.
The Undergraduate/Integrated Postgraduate Programs will start with an intake capacity of 50 students across all the disciplines during the academic year 2025-26.
Eligibility requires candidates to have maintained a first-class (60 per cent) academic record up to the 12th grade or equivalent, and possess a valid CUET (UG) scorecard in the relevant discipline.
Students can opt for a change of major within the broad discipline at the end of the first year.
