New Delhi: The IT giant Infosys has terminated the employment of about 195 trainees due to their failure to pass internal assessments, according to company emails.
This latest action brings the total number of trainee dismissals by Infosys to over 800 since February. Previously, in February, the company laid off more than 400 trainees at its Mysuru campus. Following those earlier dismissals, the IT workers’ union NITES (Nascent Information Technology Employee Senate) called for a comprehensive investigation report, including Infosys’ submissions and the labour department’s findings.
Infosys provided and funded training programs at NIIT and UpGrad. Up to 250 recruits participated in the training, while another 150 signed up for outplacement.
“Further to assessment of the results of your final assessment attempt, please be informed that you have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘generic foundation training programme’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts,” said the IT company’s email.
A month’s compensation, outplacement services, a 12-week training program for possible positions in the business process management sector, or a 24-week training program in the principles of information technology are being offered to those impacted.
In FY25, Infosys employed 15,000 trainees. The affected trainees were onboarded in October 2024, while the others were employed in 2022.
The layoffs occur amid an uncertain macroenvironment for Infosys and the IT sector. The business has projected revenue growth for FY26 to be up to 3 per cent. It has stated that it plans to add about 20,000 additional workers in FY26.
