Kolkata: The West Bengal Health Department has approved 744 new wellness centres across the state.
With telemedicine services gaining in popularity in West Bengal, these new centres will help in further expansion. A total of Rs 52.08 crore has been allocated to upgrade the health centres into wellness centres.
Each wellness centre is already armed with primary basic infrastructure. This infrastructure is further being upgraded to provide telemedicine and other improved services. An amount of seven lakh rupees has been allocated for each centre.
According to the state government notification, Murshidabad will have the maximum number of 175 wellness centres in the state.
There will be 107 new wellness centres in Purba Bardhaman, 92 in Malda, 76 in Hooghly, 64 in Uttar Dinajpur, 49 in Purulia and 46 in Bankura. Bishnupur has at minimum one wellness centre approved.
These wellness centres are allowing rural people to consult medical specialists because of telemedicine services. Now, the Health Department is looking to further widen the ambit of these services.
