Kolkata: The West Bengal Health Department had instructed all medicine shops in the state to display a specific QR code being provided by Swasthya Bhavan.
Any consumer can scan the QR Code and obtain information about 300 suspicious or fake medicines. They can then verify that they are not purchasing any fake medicines.
The Health Department has been stung into action following the impounding of more than 300 fake medicines across Hooghly, Bardhaman and Kolkata.
These include medicines for hypertension (Telma AM), diabetes, inhalers and injections.
The Drug Control General of India (DGCI) had sent the QR code to that Health Department with the instruction that all medicine sellers need to thoroughly check the details of medicines they are receiving.
The State Drug Control has subsequently instructed all medicine shop owners and wholesalers to display this QR code at their shops and godowns.
Most of the fake medicines come from different states. Accordingly, the State Drug Control has sent letters to 5 states, including UP, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Bihar. Even searches are going on for fake medicines manufacturing factories.
