Bhubaneswar: Odisha, long known for its mineral wealth, has recently seen significant discoveries of both gold and aluminum.
Recently, significant gold reserves have been discovered in many districts of Odisha. The results were confirmed by Bibhuti Jena, State Mines Minister. The government now even plans a huge gold mine auction, too.
Districts like Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Deogarh have been found to have gold reserves. Exploration and research are still continuing in districts like Malkangiri, Sambalpur and Boudh.
Adasa-Rampalli in the Deogarh district is an important discovery where GSI is currently conducting G-2 level exploration for both gold and copper.
Gopur-Gazipur, Mankadchuan, Saleikana and Dimirimunda are the main locations for drilling operations in Keonjhar. Kashipur, Suriaguda, Ruaansi, Idelkucha, Maredihi, Suleipat and Badampahad are the potential gold spots in Mayurbhanj.
Odisha Mining Corporation, GSI and the Odisha government are setting up a technical committee to assess the viability of the discovered gold deposits. Commercialization will start with the auction of gold mines.
The aluminium foray will be through the private route though. Vedanta is investing Rs 1000 crore to set up a modern aluminum park in Jhasuguda close to the aluminium smelter and an aluminum plant in the Rayagada district.
The park will span 253 acres and attract 100+ MSMEs, generating 200,000 employment. The Rayagada plant will have a three million tonnes per annum capacity
