Gangtok: The Central Government has sanctioned Rs 555.70 crore to Sikkim for the infrastructural damage and other losses the state suffered during the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in October 2023.
The GLOF occurred downstream along the Teesta river basin during that month.
This financial assistance was approved from the recovery and reconstruction funding window under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) for various sectors’ disaster recovery and reconstruction requirements.
Earlier, the Central Government had approved the National Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Risk Mitigation Project (NGRMP) across four states, including Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh as well
For NGRMP, a budgetary outlay of Rs 40 crore will be spent on Sikkim. Out of this, the Central Government will spend Rs 36 crore while Sikkim will spend the remaining four crore.
The project envisages the risk associated with GLOF, assesses the hazards and risks, introduces a mechanism for monitoring and early warning systems and takes up mitigation measures to reduce the damage.
