New Delhi: India Post will roll out a new postal service called ‘Gyan Post’ from 1 May, designed to facilitate the low-cost delivery of educational, social, cultural and religious books across the country.
The Ministry of Communications has notified the service under the government’s broader push to improve educational access, particularly in rural and underserved regions. The initiative will be available at all departmental post offices across India.
Affordable Distribution of Educational Material
According to the official gazette notification, ‘Gyan Post’ is aimed solely at the non-commercial circulation of printed books and study materials. This includes school textbooks, competitive exam preparation guides, and religious or cultural texts, provided they are not intended for sale or advertising purposes.
The pricing structure is designed to keep distribution costs minimal:
Rs 20 for packages up to 300 grams
Rs 100 for packages up to five kg
(Taxes applicable)
The parcels will be transported via surface mail, which reduces delivery costs, though it may increase transit time compared to air mail.
Content and Compliance Rules
Only books and printed educational materials are allowed under the scheme. As per guidelines, materials with advertisements (except book lists or incidental notices) will not be accepted.
Additionally, each item must mention the name of the printer or publisher, following existing publishing regulations. Books or materials published for business, marketing, or profit purposes are excluded from the scheme.
Part of Education Delivery Infrastructure
While the government has pitched this as part of its National Education Policy (NEP) implementation, experts point out that success will depend on awareness, ease of use, and postal efficiency, especially in hard-to-reach regions.
Officials suggest the move could complement digital learning efforts by supporting areas with limited internet access through the distribution of physical educational content. The government has not announced any dedicated funding or subsidy mechanism for the initiative as of now.
