Digha: The West Bengal government expects Digha to turn into an international tourist attraction following the inauguration of the newly built Jagannath temple on 30 April.
Digha is already a popular seaside resort town in the Purba Medinipur district and an extremely popular tourist destination.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee anticipates that the Jagannath temple will add to Digha’s established beach tourism, increasing its overall tourist attraction.
The new Jagannath Temple is a replica of the 12th-century shrine in Puri in Odisha. About 350 km from Puri, the new temple is set to be inaugurated on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya.
While the sea has been a charm for the influx of domestic tourists till now, the temple will make it a place of pilgrimage and turn it into an international tourist attraction.
With a large influx of tourists expected during the inauguration, 800 policemen from 12 districts are currently guarding the resort town along with one company of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stationed across 14 bathing ghats.
More than 100 CCTV cameras have been installed, watch towers erected, and drones are being used for aerial surveillance.
Entry points to Digha are under strict surveillance, while speedboats have been stationed at ghats and beaches to monitor the crowd.
