New Delhi, September 3 (APAC Media): Coal India Limited (CIL) plans to invest nearly Rs 50,000 crore in coal gasification, critical minerals and renewable energy as part of its diversification strategy.
Coal India Chairman B. Sai Ram said the company is expanding beyond conventional coal mining to meet evolving energy needs, strengthen domestic resource utilisation and reduce import dependence.
A key focus is coal gasification, with CIL developing projects to convert coal into synthesis gas and other industrial inputs.
Its first commercial project in Lakhanpur, Odisha, is being implemented by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited, a joint venture between CIL and BHEL.
The project involves an investment of over Rs 25,000 crore and is expected to produce around 6.60 lakh tonnes of ammonium nitrate annually. Mechanical work has commenced.
CIL is also developing gasification projects in West Bengal with GAIL and Maharashtra with BPCL, both currently at the tender stage.
In critical minerals, CIL has acquired five domestic blocks containing graphite and rare metals and is exploring overseas lithium opportunities in Chile, Argentina and Australia. It has also established CIL Global in Singapore to support international operations.
On renewable energy, CIL aims to achieve 9.5 GW capacity by 2030, including solar projects and battery energy storage systems to improve power reliability.
