Bhopal: The Bhopal Division of West Central Railway (WCR) has introduced ‘Speed Vision’, an internally developed software tool designed to automate the analysis of locomotive speedometer data. The move is part of the division’s broader push towards data-driven safety audits and operational transparency in daily rail functioning.
Developed over a one-month period by Chief Loco Inspector Surendra Srivastava, under the guidance of DRM Devashish Tripathi and DEE (TRO) Sachin Sharma, the software was officially launched at the Guna Crew Lobby by WCR General Manager Shobhana Bandopadhyay.
According to Bhopal Division PRO Nawal Agarwal, Speed Vision extracts data from speedometer files and converts it into graphical reports that capture key operational indicators such as speed, distance covered, time logs, braking patterns, overspeed instances, and brake test records. The system replaces traditional manual methods of analysis, significantly reducing human error and turnaround time.
The Bhopal Division currently analyses approximately 13 floppies per day, amounting to around 400 speedometer records each month. These records are used to evaluate loco pilot performance. When irregularities are detected, the concerned employees are counselled and, if necessary, undergo retraining. In June 2025, only 8 out of 400 assessments required such interventions.
With 747 loco pilots and 729 assistant loco pilots under the division, the software offers a scalable mechanism for regular performance tracking. Speed Vision also facilitates immediate report sharing with senior officials via email, WhatsApp, and other digital platforms, enabling timely review and decision-making.
