Kalyani: Kalyani University is set to become the first university in the state to get recognised for its Biodiversity Campus.
The Biodiversity Board will soon make the announcement, though the dates are yet to be finalised.
A Biodiversity Park was created inside the Kalyani University campus in 2016. There are different units located in this 10-year-old park.
Some units have medicinal herbs, while others have bigger trees for preparing medicines.
There is a butterfly garden, one garden for spices and one even for dyes, where plants are used for natural colours. Lipstick or mehendi is prepared here.
The Biodiversity Park also boasts of eight types of Tulsi, nutmegs, groundnuts, basak, water chestnuts, among others.
There are rare and vanishing species top including indigenous fruits, African trees, seven types of bamboo and eight types of banyan.
There is a pond too, surrounded by saline mangroves of Sundarbans. Now there are plans to plant sweet water mangroves or hijals across three hectares of land in the park. Hijals, too, are a vanishing species.
With thr Biodiversity Board praising this Park because of its variety, Kalyani University will soon add this feather in its cap.
