Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the state’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, developed by Torrent Group. The facility, only the second of its kind in India, has been designed to produce 72,000 tonnes of green fuel annually and will initially blend 2% green hydrogen with natural gas for city gas distribution through both compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) networks.
The plant operates on a 2 MW renewable energy system that generates hydrogen through electrolysis, a process expected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 500 tonnes each year. Officials highlighted that this pilot blending initiative could pave the way for scaling up hydrogen use in urban gas distribution networks.
The project aligns with the state’s Green Hydrogen Policy, announced in 2024, which provides a 30% capital subsidy for green hydrogen and ammonia facilities, with up to 40% for the first four projects. The policy aims to attract private sector investment and establish Uttar Pradesh as a hub for emerging clean fuel technologies.
Addressing the inauguration, Adityanath linked the project to broader climate concerns, pointing to changing rainfall patterns and their impact on agriculture. He noted that while hydrogen energy is currently expensive, production costs are expected to decline over time as the technology matures.
Officials underscored Uttar Pradesh’s comparative advantage in hydrogen generation due to its water resources, positioning the state to play a key role in India’s energy transition.
