Noida: Samsung has begun laptop manufacturing at its Greater Noida plant, expanding its local production portfolio in India beyond smartphones, tablets, wearables, and feature phones. The move marks a strategic step in strengthening its role within India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, which has become a critical contributor to both domestic demand and global exports.
The South Korean technology company has maintained a manufacturing presence in India since 1996, with its Noida facility now operating as one of its largest global mobile production units. By introducing laptop assembly to the plant, Samsung is expected to increase its engagement in India’s growing personal computing market, where it currently trails behind established competitors.
Union IT and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, after meeting executives from Samsung Southwest Asia, said the expansion aligns with India’s objectives under the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Industry observers note that this development also reflects a broader trend of global manufacturers diversifying production bases into India, supported by government incentives and skilled labour availability.
Samsung remains India’s second-largest smartphone exporter after Apple, producing its premium Galaxy Z series and all devices sold domestically. It also holds a 27% share in the country’s tablet market, driven largely by the Galaxy Tab A9 Plus 5G. With India’s tablet market recording 20% year-on-year growth and electronics exports gaining significance in economic policy, the addition of laptops to Samsung’s local production line is likely to enhance India’s position in global technology supply chains.
