New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of retired IAS Amit Khare as Secretary to the Vice-President of India.Â
His appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge and will be on a contractual basis for three years, in the rank and pay of Secretary.
Khare has been serving as Advisor to the Prime Minister of India since October 12, 2021, where he handles key social sector portfolios. With over three decades in public service, he has played a key role in several policy reforms at both the central and state levels.
At the Centre, Khare served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Higher Education from 2008 to 2014. He worked on education policy, international collaborations with UNESCO, and copyright reforms. He also served as Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and later as Secretary of School Education & Literacy and Higher Education. He was part of the core team that framed and implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a major reform in India’s education system.
In his home cadre of Jharkhand, Khare held several top roles, including Secretary of Human Resource Development, Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University, Development Commissioner, and Additional Chief Secretary (Finance-cum-Planning). He introduced reforms in budgeting, financial inclusion, Direct Benefit Transfer, and scheme implementation.
