Mumbai: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a contract valued between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to build 156 km of ballastless track for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor. The contract, identified as Package T1, involves design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning, covering sections from Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex to Zaroli village in Gujarat. The stretch includes more than 21 km of underground track and 135 km of elevated viaducts.
According to L&T’s regulatory filing, the order is classified as “large” under the company’s project categorisation framework. With this award, L&T now holds responsibility for more than half of the track-works in India’s first bullet train project. The company had earlier secured Package T3 in April 2022, which covers 116 km between Vadodara and Sabarmati.
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is structured through packages such as T1, T2, and T3, which divide the 508 km corridor into separate construction segments. The work under Package T1 will adopt Japanese Shinkansen J Slab Track Technology, designed for speeds of up to 320 kmph. This technology is known for its durability and low-maintenance requirements, features that are expected to shape India’s upcoming high-speed rail infrastructure.
L&T has been involved in ballastless track construction across Indian metro systems, including in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai, and has also executed international projects such as Jakarta. The order reflects India’s continued progress in advancing the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project, a key infrastructure initiative under the country’s high-speed rail plans.
