New Delhi, September 16 (APAC Media): India’s semiconductor ambitions will take centre stage at SEMICON India 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate the fifth edition of the country’s flagship semiconductor and electronics event on September 17 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.
Running from September 17 to 19, the event will bring together global semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, researchers, startups, academia and students under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
But what exactly is SEMICON India, and why is the 2026 edition significant for India’s chip ambitions?
What Is SEMICON India 2026?
SEMICON India is a major industry platform focused on India’s semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing ecosystem. Organised by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), MeitY and SEMI, the 2026 edition will showcase developments across the semiconductor value chain.
More than 600 companies are expected to participate, with representatives from 52 countries, over 400 executives and 150 speakers. The exhibition will feature six country pavilions, 12 State booths, a Startup Pavilion, Innovation Showcase, Student Hackathon and Workforce Development Pavilion.
The event is therefore designed not simply as an exhibition, but as a platform for business partnerships, investment, technology collaboration, talent development, and global industry engagement.
From Sand to Silicon to Systems: What Will Be Showcased?
One of the key attractions will be the “Sand to Silicon to Systems” Value Chain Experience, which will explain how semiconductor materials move through manufacturing, advanced packaging, chip design, electronics and ultimately into complete systems.
This approach is important because a semiconductor ecosystem extends far beyond chip fabrication. It requires materials, equipment, design capabilities, packaging, testing, research, skilled talent, and downstream electronics manufacturing.
International participation from countries including Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden will also provide opportunities for technology and industry collaboration.
How Far Has India’s Semiconductor Mission Come?
India’s semiconductor push has moved from policy announcements towards project execution.
Under the Semicon India Programme, the government has approved 12 semiconductor projects aimed at establishing a resilient domestic ecosystem.
The government has also approved Semicon 2.0, the next phase of the programme, with six major pillars aimed at accelerating semiconductor ecosystem development.
Why Does SEMICON India Matter for India’s Chip Ambitions?
The global semiconductor industry is being reshaped by demand from artificial intelligence, advanced computing, telecommunications, electric mobility and digital technologies.
India is seeking to establish a larger role across this value chain by combining domestic demand, skilled talent, semiconductor design capabilities, manufacturing investments and policy support.
The global semiconductor market was valued at around USD 796 billion in 2025 and is projected to exceed USD 2 trillion by 2030. India’s semiconductor demand, estimated at around USD 50 billion, is projected to reach around USD 103 billion by 2030.
SEMICON India 2026 comes at this crucial stage of that journey. Its focus on connecting materials, manufacturing, design, packaging, electronics, startups and talent reflects India’s broader effort to build an integrated semiconductor ecosystem.
