Gurugram: Jio Payments Bank (JPBL), a subsidiary of Jio Financial Services, will implement an AI-driven Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system on the Gurugram–Jaipur stretch of National Highway 48, marking a significant step toward India’s transition to barrier-free toll collection.
Under a contract awarded by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), JPBL will deploy the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based MLFF system at two key toll plazas—Shahjahanpur and Manoharpura. The project is part of a national pilot initiative to test advanced tolling models that eliminate the need for vehicles to stop or slow down at toll gates.
The MLFF framework combines multiple technologies, including Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), ANPR, Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Together, these enable real-time toll deduction and traffic monitoring across multiple lanes, helping reduce congestion and improve commuter experience.
JPBL’s selection for the project adds to its growing role in digital highway payments, as the bank already manages FASTag-based toll collection across 11 plazas nationwide. With the MLFF rollout, JPBL becomes one of the first financial institutions in India to pilot this next generation tolling infrastructure, indicating the BFSI sector’s expanding role in mobility and infrastructure digitization.
JPBL Managing Director and CEO Vinod Easwaran said the project aligns with the bank’s broader focus on digitizing everyday transactions and improving financial connectivity for commuters. The company is also exploring operational synergies with Jio Platforms to strengthen its technology backbone and ensure seamless toll management across highways.
The pilot’s outcomes will likely shape the roadmap for large-scale MLFF adoption across India’s national highways, supporting the government’s long-term goal of creating fully automated, interoperable tolling systems.
