New Delhi: Union Minister for Railways, Electronics & IT, and Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, today tried out Mappls, a fully indigenous smart navigation app developed by MapmyIndia, and experienced its features firsthand.
Vaishanw said that Indian Railways would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mappls to explore the app’s potential integration across railway operations.
APAC Media learnt that the meeting between Rakesh Verma, Co-Founder & CMD of Mappls MapmyIndia and Union Minister Vaishnaw took place last weekend, during which they discussed the operations of Mappls and a discussion regarding integrations with other systems.
The decision to explore the app’s potential use across railway operations marks a major step forward. The team believes Mappls MapmyIndia can contribute significantly to the Railways, enhancing internal safety systems as well as improving services for passengers if and when the MoU is signed.
Following the successful integration of Zoho into central government systems, another indigenous company, Mappls, is optimistic that it could be the next indigenous platform to be adopted, and expects this collaboration to take shape soon.
Mappls, part of the “Swadeshi” digital ecosystem, showcases India’s growing self-reliance in mapping and navigation technologies. The platform offers several advanced features, such as 3D junction views, enabling users to get realistic previews of flyovers, underpasses and roundabouts for smoother navigation. Its exact doorstep navigation ensures precise address detection, a crucial feature for logistics and last-mile connectivity.
The app also provides real-time driving alerts for speed limits, accident-prone zones, sharp turns, speed breakers, traffic signals and CCTV camera locations. Additionally, its trip cost calculator helps users estimate total journey expenses, including fuel and tolls and even suggests cost-saving options such as NHAI Fastag annual passes or vehicle-based fuel efficiency comparisons.
With these capabilities, Mappls aims to enhance safety, reduce travel costs, and promote smarter mobility. Designed and developed entirely in India, the app is tailored specifically for Indian terrains, routes, and traffic conditions. The proposed collaboration with Indian Railways could pave the way for integrating this homegrown technology into various transport operations, from real-time monitoring and asset tracking to improving passenger information systems.
The demonstration marks another milestone in India’s push toward indigenous digital innovation and the broader “Digital India” vision of building advanced, self-reliant technology solutions for national use.
