Noida, Aug 31 (APAC Media): Shares of HDFC Bank rose nearly 2% in early trade on Monday after Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan decided not to seek another term, with analysts saying the move removes an overhang on the stock and could bring greater clarity to the lender’s leadership transition.
The stock gained as much as 1% to Rs 730 on the NSE before paring some of its gains.
Jagdishan informed the bank’s board on August 29 that he would not seek reappointment for another term. HDFC Bank said he will retire from the bank after the close of business on October 26, 2026.
According to the bank, its board attempted to persuade Jagdishan to continue, but he reiterated his decision.
“The Board deeply appreciated his commitment, leadership, and contribution to the growth and stability of the Bank,” HDFC Bank said in a regulatory filing, while acknowledging his role in the successful completion of the merger with Housing Development Finance Corporation.
Analysts said the market reaction could be linked to the removal of uncertainty surrounding the CEO’s reappointment, which had weighed on investor sentiment.
Broking Morgan Stanley said the CEO reappointment issue had been an “overhang on the stock” and termed the decision to expedite the succession process positive.
The broking also pointed to HDFC Bank’s significant underperformance against the broader market this year, saying the lender’s fundamentals were showing signs of improvement and the stock offered “deep value” compared with historical valuations.
JPMorgan said an accelerated succession process could help reduce uncertainty, while noting that a recovery in net interest income growth would be important for restoring investor confidence.
Nomura expects the stock to remain range-bound until greater clarity emerges on the successor. It said the appointment of a credible candidate could act as a “meaningful rerating catalyst”.
Macquarie, meanwhile, flagged uncertainty around the leadership transition as the bank continues to recalibrate its balance sheet following the merger.
Investors will now focus on HDFC Bank’s choice of successor, with the appointment expected to be a key near-term trigger for the stock.
