Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Sanjay Kumar Hansda as Executive Director.
His appointment comes soon after his return to the central bank on October 6, 2025, following his deputation as Senior Advisor to the Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund.
In his new position, Hansda will head the Department of Economic and Policy Research, a key division responsible for economic analysis and shaping India’s monetary policy outlook. Previously, he had been serving as an adviser in the same department.
Hansda’s career at the RBI includes several leadership roles. He has served as an adviser in the Monetary Policy Department and also led the Internal Debt Management Department as Officer-in-Charge and Director. These roles strengthened his expertise in policy design, debt operations, and macroeconomic strategy.
Hansda has played an active role in international policy discussions, contributing to G-20 deliberations and matters related to sovereign and foreign currency reserves. He also worked on initiatives involving coordination among regulatory bodies. His international exposure includes a stint at the Bank of England as an Analyst in the Financial Stability unit.
Over the years, he has been part of several committees under the Bank of England, the Committee on the Global Financial System, and panels set up by the Government of India. Hansda holds a post-graduate degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a diploma in financial services management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
