Visakhapatnam: Google has announced a $15 billion investment to establish a 1-gigawatt data centre and artificial intelligence hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.Â
Reportedly, this marks the tech giant’s biggest investment in India so far and is expected to play a central role in strengthening the country’s AI cloud ecosystem.Â
The facility will serve as a major infrastructure backbone for AI-driven services and cloud computing.
Partnership with Airtel to Build High-Tech Infrastructure
Telecom major Airtel has partnered with Google to jointly develop the data centre and a state-of-the-art Cable Landing Station (CLS). This CLS will host Google’s new international subsea cables, linking Andhra Pradesh to Google’s global terrestrial and subsea infrastructure network. Airtel will also deploy a strong intra-city and inter-city fiber network to support the project.
The high-capacity fiber network is expected to deliver low-latency digital experiences to users while improving the resilience of India’s digital backbone. The initiative aims to boost digital inclusivity across the country and expand access to AI-powered services for businesses and consumers.
Strengthening India’s Position in the AI Era
According to Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, data has become a strategic resource in the digital economy, and such large-scale AI infrastructure will give India a competitive edge. The upcoming facility will integrate advanced AI capabilities, energy-efficient systems, and an expanded fiber-optic network to meet the growing demand for data-intensive applications.
Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Bharti Airtel Limited, emphasized that the collaboration with Google marks a defining milestone in shaping India’s digital future. He stated that merging world-class AI infrastructure with India’s growing talent pool will position the country as a leader in AI innovation and digital transformation.Â
Economic and Employment Impact
The $15 billion investment is projected to generate more than 180,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, making it one of the most significant foreign direct investments (FDI) in India’s technology sector.Â
Beyond meeting India’s rapidly growing data and AI needs, the facility will also function as an important global node in Google’s wider AI infrastructure network.
MoU Signing in the Presence of Top Leaders
A formal memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed in New Delhi in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The project is being viewed as a strategic leap toward developing Visakhapatnam as a global technology hub.
