New Delhi: PhonePe has rolled out biometric authentication for UPI transactions upto Rs 5,000.
This will allow users to authorise payments inside the app using device-level fingerprint or facial recognition according to the current regulatory guidelines.
However, UPI transactions above the prescribed limit will still need the UPI PIN.Â
According to PhonePe, the feature has been designed to reduce friction in the payment flow while maintaining security, using the smartphone’s native security stack as a second authentication factor for low-value transactions.
The company has shared a step-by-step guide for users to set up this feature:
- Step 1: Open the PhonePe app.
- Step 2: Go to Profile.Â
- Step 3: Tap on Manage Payments.Â
- Step 4: Tap on the Biometric Pay Icon.Â
- Step 5: Enable Biometric Authentication for UPI Payments for respective Bank accounts.Â
- Step 6: Confirm using your UPI PIN and biometrics for a one-time setup.Â
The feature is currently available for Android users. It will support both fingerprint and facial recognition capabilities. The iOS functionality is expected to be launched soon.
