New Delhi, June 22 (APAC Media): The Delhi government is set to upgrade around 93,000 streetlights with a smart LED lighting system.
The project aims to improve road visibility, enhance energy efficiency, and strengthen road safety across the capital.
A key feature of the initiative is its performance-based payment model.
Under this system, contractors will be paid based on the operational efficiency of the streetlights rather than fixed lump-sum payments.

Under the project, the Public Works Department (PWD) will replace old streetlights, including sodium lamps and older LEDs, with smart LED lights.
The government will also add about 5,000 new electric poles to improve lighting in dark and poorly lit areas.
In the new system, contractors will be paid only when streetlights are working properly and maintenance rules are followed.
If lights stay faulty or repairs are delayed, payments will be reduced or withheld. Officials say this will improve accountability and ensure better long-term maintenance.
A central command and control centre will be set up at the PWD headquarters to monitor all streetlights in real time.
The smart lighting system will allow authorities to adjust brightness based on weather conditions and traffic needs, making the system more efficient and responsive.
According to the finance department’s assessment, switching to smart LED lighting will help reduce electricity use significantly.
The government estimates savings of around ₹300 crore over the next five years, making the project both cost-saving and environmentally friendly.
Along with the streetlight upgrade project, the Delhi government will also replace about 1.4 lakh Chinese-origin CCTV cameras across the city in phases.
In the first phase, around 50,000 cameras will be replaced to improve surveillance quality and strengthen public safety.
The Delhi government’s smart streetlight initiative is a major step toward safer, more energy-efficient, and tech-driven urban infrastructure.
With real-time monitoring, strict performance-based accountability, and large-scale CCTV upgrades, the project is expected to improve road safety and reduce operational costs in the coming years.
