Mumbai, June 19(CXO Media): Reliance Jio is exploring satellite-based internet services as it prepares for its upcoming initial public offering (IPO), signaling a potential expansion beyond traditional telecom networks.
Speaking at Reliance Industries’ annual meeting on June 19, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said Jio, after connecting India through ground-based infrastructure, is now evaluating ways to extend connectivity through satellite technology.
Satellite communications are increasingly being viewed as a strategic infrastructure asset, supporting both commercial internet services and critical communication networks during emergencies. Jio’s interest in satellite internet comes as companies such as Starlink, OneWeb and Amazon’s Project Kuiper race to expand global broadband coverage through low-earth orbit satellite constellations. The development also follows reports that approvals for Starlink’s commercial rollout in India remain under scrutiny, highlighting the growing focus on digital sovereignty and domestic communication infrastructure.
For Reliance Jio, satellite broadband could open new opportunities in enterprise connectivity, government projects and underserved regions, while strengthening its position in India’s rapidly evolving telecom and broadband market ahead of its IPO filing.
