Noida, June 24 (APAC Media): Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPVL) on June 23, unveiled an ambitious long-term growth roadmap at its annual Investor Day, setting a target to more than double its sales volume to over 1.2 million units and capture a 20% market share by fiscal 2031.
The strategic shift comes on the back of a record fiscal year 2026, during which the domestic automaker posted its strongest-ever performance, selling over 640,000 vehicles.
Therefore, the surge was led by a sharp recovery in the second half, underscoring momentum in the highly competitive domestic automotive sector and reinforcing the company’s position as a major player in the Indian market.
In fiscal year 2026, the company achieved its highest-ever annual electric vehicle (EV) sales, surpassing 92,000 units. The milestone helped it maintain its leadership position in India’s electric mobility segment for the seventh consecutive year.

At the same time, the company’s twin-cylinder compressed natural gas (CNG) portfolio outperformed broader market trends, recording sales of over 170,000 units. Growth was driven by strong demand for key models, including the Nexon and Punch, along with the newly introduced Sierra nameplate.
“Our agile actions and disciplined execution translated into record volumes, increasing market shares, and undisputed EV leadership in FY26. As the Indian automotive landscape shifts toward younger buyers and alternative powertrains, we are well-positioned to leverage our upcoming portfolio of 15 nameplates to capture structural growth and expand into brand new whitespace segments,” said Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors.
Looking ahead to FY31, Tata Motors has projected that the Indian passenger vehicle industry will grow to 6.4 million units, supported by rising disposable incomes and shorter vehicle ownership cycles of four to five years.
The company estimates that electric and CNG variants will account for more than 45% of total industry volumes by the end of the decade. To capitalise on this shift, the automaker plans to introduce six all-new nameplates, along with over 20 major facelifts, focusing on advanced design language, premium technology features, and software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture.

Operationally, the automaker’s ‘THRIVE’ transformation programme has delivered structural improvements over the past 18 months, including a 59% reduction in early-life vehicle issues and a significant improvement in customer service turnaround times across its nationwide service network.
This operational discipline helped more than 90% of the company’s dealer network close FY26 on a profitable note. It was further supported by a four-fold increase in international business volumes, driven by a successful re-entry into the South African market.
Together, these factors are helping Tata Motors strengthen its foundations to convert macroeconomic recovery into durable, long-term profitable growth.
