Kolkata, July 14 (APAC Media): West Bengal’s school education system is set for a significant overhaul after the state decided to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and join the PM Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) scheme.Â
The move is expected to unlock Central funding while introducing wide-ranging reforms in school infrastructure, student welfare, teacher recruitment and learning in the classroom.
From upgraded classrooms and cleaner campuses to higher mid-day meal allocations and transparent teacher recruitment, the reforms aim to modernise government schools and improve learning outcomes across the state.
Why the Move Matters?
By adopting NEP 2020 and the PM-SHRI scheme, West Bengal becomes eligible for Central assistance to strengthen school infrastructure and implement education reforms aligned with national standards.
Major Infrastructure for Bengal
One of the biggest changes will be the modernisation of government schools across the state.
The government has announced that grants will be released to nearly 81,000 government schools for infrastructure development after several schools reportedly missed financial support over the past three years.
The proposed upgrades include:
- Clean toilets
- Arsenic-free drinking water
- Water purifiers
- Hygienic kitchen utensils
- Gas-based cooking for mid-day meals
- Solar panels (to be introduced in phases)
- Ceiling fans in schools lacking adequate ventilation
- Sanitary napkin vending machines in girls’ and co-educational schools
The first phase of implementation will cover districts including Birbhum, Bankura, Purulia, and Jhargram.Â
Mid-Day Meal Scheme to Get a Boost
Under the PM Poshan Scheme, the state has announced an increase in the per-student allocation for primary school mid-day meals from Rs 6.78 to Rs 10, effective 1 August.
The government has also proposed introducing ISKCON-managed meal services in Kolkata and selected districts from August 1. This aims to improve the quality and nutritional value of meals served to students.Â
Teacher Recruitment to Be Merit-Based
The government has announced that future teacher appointments will be conducted strictly on merit while following reservation provisions for SC, ST, OBC and Persons with Disabilities.Â
A senior bureaucrat has been appointed to oversee the recruitment process with the objective of improving transparency and administrative oversight.
What It Means for Students?
If implemented as announced, the reforms could significantly improve the learning environment in government schools through better infrastructure, improved sanitation, enhanced nutrition and greater digital and energy efficiency.
Combined with the adoption of NEP 2020 and PM-SHRI, the initiatives are expected to align West Bengal’s school education system more closely with national education reforms while strengthening access to quality public education.
