Google Unveils New Initiatives to Strengthen India’s AI Ecosystem

Free AI Research Program for Students and Developers

Google DeepMind is introducing its 56-hour AI Research Foundations curriculum in India to help develop the country’s next generation of AI talent.

Offered free of cost, the programme will train students and AI developers in building and fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) while enabling them to conduct high-impact AI research.

Participants will also have the opportunity to earn Google Cloud Skill Badges and industry-recognised certificates upon successful completion of the programme.

Gemini-Powered AI Assistant for Schools

To strengthen AI education at the school level, Google has expanded its collaboration with the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) by launching ATL Saathi, a Gemini-powered desktop application designed for teachers.

The platform will assist educators in delivering the Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) curriculum and curating hands-on learning experiences. ATL Saathi will initially be introduced in 100 schools, with plans to expand to 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs across India.

AI to Strengthen Healthcare Innovation

Google is also deepening its partnership with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by expanding the use of its open-source MedGemma models for India-specific healthcare applications.

Building on existing AI solutions for dermatology and OPD triaging, AIIMS researchers are developing AI models for leprosy and sexual and reproductive health, enabling diagnosis and clinical support through image and text inputs. These models will be made available to the wider Indian developer community.

Additionally, the National Health Authority has leveraged Gemma 4 and Google’s Medical Data Toolkit to develop Aarogya Setu 2.0.

Boosting AI in Indian Languages and Secure Cloud Infrastructure

Google announced that Gemini Live now supports conversations in more than 25 Indian languages and dialects, including Sanskrit, Bhojpuri, and Maithili. The company has also open-sourced speech and image datasets covering 109 Indic languages through its collaboration with IISc Bengaluru under Project Vaani.

For enterprises and government organisations, Google has introduced Gemini on Google Distributed Cloud, allowing regulated industries to deploy generative AI entirely within Indian data centres. The solution offers strict data residency, sovereign controls, and offline deployment, ensuring sensitive information remains within secure organisational boundaries while meeting regulatory compliance requirements.
