Bengaluru, July 14 (APAC Media): Karnataka will establish India’s first government-driven AI University, marking a major step towards strengthening the country’s AI ecosystem.Â
The announcement was made by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar while inaugurating Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru on July 14.
Along with the AI University, the state government will develop:
- A dedicated AI Hub that will function as an incubation centre for research, innovation, and development in artificial intelligence. The hub will support start-ups, technology companies, researchers, and academic institutions working on AI-driven solutions.
- Karnataka’s AI Policy to build a globally competitive AI ecosystem, attract investments and support AI startups.
- AI education from Class VI onwards to equip students with foundational AI skills for the future.
- Two next generation Green Data Centres, one in a coastal district and another near Bengaluru, to strengthen Karnataka’s AI and digital infrastructure.Â
Speaking to technology leaders, entrepreneurs, developers, researchers, and policymakers from India and abroad, the Chief Minister described Artificial Intelligence as the defining technological revolution of the current generation, comparing its impact to that of the steam engine, electricity, the internet, and mobile technology.
Shivakumar said Karnataka aims to become an AI-native state, where artificial intelligence is used responsibly to improve governance and enhance citizens’ daily lives. He emphasized that AI should enable teachers to educate more effectively, help doctors diagnose diseases earlier, provide better advisory services to farmers, improve access to government services, and empower small businesses to compete more efficiently.
The proposed AI University and AI Hub are expected to position Karnataka as a leading destination for AI education, research, innovation, and talent development in India.
