New Delhi, July 3 (APAC Media): India and Japan on Thursday announced 16 agreements following the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, expanding cooperation across artificial intelligence (AI), economic security, clean energy, mobility, critical minerals, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and financial services.Â
Key Outcomes of the Summit
- Economic Security: India and Japan signed a Joint Declaration to strengthen cooperation in semiconductors, critical minerals, AI, ICT, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals, while building resilient supply chains.
- Artificial Intelligence: A Joint Statement on AI establishes a strategic research and development partnership, focusing on safe, secure, inclusive, and human-centric AI.
- IndiaAI-METI Partnership: IndiaAI Mission and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will collaborate on AI policy, joint projects, business partnerships, and shared computing resources.
- Energy Resilience: Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in strategic petroleum reserves, maritime energy transport, and energy security.
- India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons: The two countries will celebrate 2027 as the Year of Shared Horizons, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations.
- Biogas Initiative: A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed to establish 1,000 biogas and organic fertiliser plants across India through dairy cooperatives.
- Battery Supply Chains: India and Japan will work together to strengthen trusted and sustainable battery manufacturing and supply chains.
- Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices: The partnership will focus on securing supply chains for APIs and key starting materials through investment and technical collaboration.
- Critical Minerals: Both countries aim to expand cooperation in geology and upstream critical mineral exploration.
- Next Generation Mobility Partnership: The initiative will promote collaboration in railways, automobiles, roads, aviation, shipbuilding, ports, logistics, and urban development.
- Life Sciences Research: C-CAMP and Japan’s RIKEN will collaborate on deep-tech research in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sciences.
- Biological Sciences: The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and RIKEN will expand cooperation in biology and neuroscience research.
- Large Language Models (LLMs): IIT Bombay, BharatGen Technology Foundation, and Japan’s National Institute of Informatics will jointly develop LLMs focused on scientific reasoning.
- AI Industry Collaboration: SarvamAI and Preferred Networks will collaborate across the AI technology stack, including foundation models.
- Internet Infrastructure: NIXI and the Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC) will work together on IPv6 adoption, cybersecurity, internet governance, and capacity building.
- Financial Services: The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and Japan’s Financial Services Agency will strengthen cooperation in financial regulation, FinTech, RegTech, and supervisory best practices.
