Mumbai, August 14 (APAC Media): The Maharashtra government is set to introduce an integrated digital identification number, ‘Maha-ID’, to make access to public services faster, simpler, and more transparent.
The initiative will use information technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to connect government departments and reduce the need for citizens to repeatedly submit documents and personal information.
The Maha-ID will not be a separate identity document. Instead, it will function as an integrated identifier linked directly to a citizen’s Aadhaar card. Once generated, the digital ID will allow residents to access schemes, subsidies, information, and other government services through a single platform.
Data Sharing to Reduce Repeated Documentation
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed government departments to adopt AI and IT-based solutions so citizens can access public services from their homes. The Maha-ID is expected to form a central part of this digital governance initiative.
Government databases already contain important records, including domicile certificates, income certificates, and ration card details. Under the proposed system, previously verified information can be reused across eligible services, reducing the need for citizens to submit physical documents for every application.
The system is expected to particularly benefit students, farmers, senior citizens, women entrepreneurs, and economically weaker sections. Students currently have to register separately on education portals for scholarships, while farmers seeking subsidies may be required to repeatedly provide identity, land, and bank details. Welfare beneficiaries also frequently resubmit certificates that are already available with government departments.
Maha-Sarathi Integration
The initiative will integrate the Maha-ID with the ‘Maha-Sarathi’ portal under the Electronics, Information Technology, and Artificial Intelligence Department. This integration is expected to connect multiple government departments and digital platforms, allowing information required by one department to be automatically accessed from another, subject to eligibility and applicable processes.
According to government sources, citizens will register and submit the required details through the designated portal. A digital Maha-ID incorporating the citizen’s Aadhaar framework will then be generated.
The initiative is expected to be outlined by the Chief Minister around Independence Day, with the official project launch likely to follow shortly. The government expects the unified system to reduce administrative duplication, eliminate operational silos and make interactions between citizens and the state more efficient.
