New Delhi, September 18 (APAC Media): Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park–AP (NSHIP-AP) to develop a greenfield shipyard at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
Rs 15,000 Crore Investment Planned
MDL will serve as the Anchor Shipyard for the proposed Dugarajapatnam Shipbuilding-cum-Port Cluster. The company plans to invest around Rs 15,000 crore over the next five to seven years, subject to necessary approvals and statutory clearances.
The proposed facility is expected to create around 45,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. It will also support sectors such as marine engineering, manufacturing, logistics, ship repair, and ancillary industries.
Shipyard to Build Large Vessels
The shipyard is planned with a design capacity of 1.2 million Gross Tonnage (GT) per year, with scope for expansion based on future market demand.
The facility is expected to cater to both domestic and international markets and manufacture commercial and specialised vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and LNG carriers.
Boost to Maritime Manufacturing
The proposed shipyard is part of the planned Dugarajapatnam Shipbuilding-cum-Port Cluster. According to the Techno-Economic Feasibility Report, the shipbuilding and ship-repair yard is estimated to require around Rs 29,254 crore, while port development is estimated at Rs 9,513 crore.
The Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board will facilitate land, infrastructure and statutory clearances for the project. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s shipbuilding capabilities and create a wider maritime manufacturing ecosystem.
