Hyderabad: The much anticipated municipal elections in Telangana’s capital city Hyderabad is going to be held on December 1, 2020 and the results are scheduled to be announced on December 4, 2020
The 150 municipal wards under the purview of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will be going for polls on December 1, 2020, said Telangana State Election Commissioner C. Parthasarathi on Tuesday while notifying the election schedule.
Election Commissioner stated that the election will be conducted on ballot paper since there were some objections against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs)
Candidate nominations will be taken from November 18 to November 20 and will be examined on November 21.
Experts believe these GHMC elections are crucial and would its results would reflect in the future elections.
The population of Hyderabad (little over 1 crore) constitutes one fourth the population of the state which around 4 crore.
The existing state ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) recorded a landslide victory in 2016 GHMC elections by winning 99 seats out of 150, while its ally political party MIM bagged 43 seats.
While the TRS party leaders are exuding confidence to repeat its triumph in upcoming election too, the BJP party is expressing a fresh lease of hope to win over majority seats especially after winning over Dubbak assembly seat in the recent by poll election from the ruling TRS party.
The MIM party, with its bastion in the Old City of Hyderabad, always managed to bag decent seats on the other hand the Congress party has been losing its hold both in local and state elections.
